alas...36
march 01, 2006

so 36 is finally here.

at my home away from home (from mon - fri), my coworkers decorated my cubicle for my bday today. actually, before lunch no one really knew it was my birthday but they posted that damn birthday calendar up on the mailroom bulletin board today and of course everyone peeked at it and found out. i'm typically pretty low key for a birthday person at work.

during lunch a few of my colleagues went out to buy decorations and stuff to make it more festive. they all know i'm very meticulous about my spartan desk and insisted on making it...busy. very busy. but it was a very very nice gesture and one that made me smile upon my return from lunch.

i did go to lunch with another group of girls at a local eatery but the food photos aren't that great. i'll post those another time. when i got home though, TGILW asked where i felt like having dinner. i just wanted something comforting and unpretentious. i definitely didn't want to get dressed up for dinner that's for sure. so i just went to my local 24 hour korean eatery for my bday dinner. the lady saw me taking photos and was completely encouraging me to take more and more and "wait till the rest of the food gets here!" she was a bit more excited that i was. man, what a difference from the brazilian bbq place.

^ the ever lovely gelatinous agar agar panchan

^ i love the simple (& complimentary) chives pajun. i personally like this over the haemul (seafood) one that costs about $13.00 a dish.

^ another tasty panchan dish, the spicy tofu

^ a cold night is nicely warmed up with a piping hot bowl of duk mandoo gook. it's a beef broth based soup with slices of rice cake and meat dumplings. they stir in some shredded beef and also an egg too. [sorry, this was a hard photo to take since everything was kind of white]

^ kim chee bok um bap aka kim chee fried rice. yes, i eat this dish A LOT. and yes, it's really really good and hearty.

^ kalbi, the marinated short ribs. at different restaurants, you get different types of short ribs. obviously the really nice barbeque restaurants have the nice high quality one while the hole in the wall 24 hour eateries serve up these ones you would typically see with the 3 bones. to me, they are all good. it's just a matter of quality really. but these are just as tasty in a different way.

^ a coworker bought me these silly mardi gras beads to wear. they are actually quite pretty and i may wear them again! :o

currently listening to: madonna, sorry
