project DOMO [18]
july 25, 2007

i hope you all got a chance to read the last entry before heading into this one so you will be "chronologically" correct. god forbid you read my entries out of sync especially where domo is concerned. :p

probably no other thing changes the home more so than color! and for DOMO it's no different especially going from a piece of dirt land to wooden beams to insulation and drywall. and now finally....it's time for color. finally! shit!

in my last entry i remarked that i spent a lot of time and energy and frustration on colors. i mean, how many shade of greens are there in nature? how many browns? oranges? gah. drove me nuts for 4 weeks! it got to the point where the dunn edwards people all knew who i was. i have to admit that toward the end, i felt so defeated by colors that i was ok with white walls. but of course i ended up with color. afterall, i've lived in a white walled home all my life and it takes so much more decoration to make it into something than walls with color.

without further ado....drumroll por favor:

the first floor "great room" is painted in PERFECT PEAR. it's a yellow green that looks like pear skin. depending on time of day, it sometimes looks green, sometimes yellow. this really wasn't MY first choice for this room as i wanted something more striking but i think we went with the right decision by going with this color that more people will be receptive to. this color was one of those last few quarts i tried out and really LOVED. i knew i wanted to use this color in one of the rooms but didn't decide until the last minute that it will be in the great room.

^ living room corner. planning on putting an L-shaped couch with a long hanging light in the corner there. will probably do curtains but haven't thought about window treatments yet. that will be at the very end.

i like how the color feels really clean and crisp while still being relatively neutral. it adds color without being too colorful. or at least in my lexicon of color, this isn't too colorful. i really wanted those rooms where one wall is one color and the perpendicular wall being a contrast color. but...it would have gotten quite complicated and pricey at that. so in the end, i just went with one color on every wall but the ceilings to remain SWISS COFFEE throughout the entire house.

^ the "entertainment" area wall. to the right is the entrance to the guest bathroom. to the left is the staircase to the second story (in case you have forgotten since it's been so long since i've had a DOMO entry). i may be cutting a half door in this wall somewhere to utilize under staircase storage but it all depends on the shower in the guest bathroom. we shall see.

^ staircase leading upstairs (duh) and the front door to the left there.

the staircase hallway was a hard place to decide on color. we weren't sure how dark it would get in there with lighting only at the bottom and top landing with no lights in between. we didn't want it too dark but i didn't want it white. plus it had to transition with the downstairs paint color and also with the upstairs paint colors too. what a tough decision. we ended up going with RICE BOWL which as you can see is kind of a light ecru color. ok, fine...beige. :p it definitely is neutral enough but with a hint of color. we initially were going to do perfect pear here or a greyish blue but....too hard to fit all those criterias above.

at the top of the landing looking down, you can see the PERFECT PEAR all lit up. at the top it doesn't look as RICE BOWL-ISH but it all depends on lighting (as always). it actually ends up quite pink up here as the window at the top of the landing reflects the sunlight off the roof tiles from the main house onto the walls.

before i do the upstairs room, let me finish showing you the guest bathroom downstairs. i initially had wanted this really dark - as in a dark blue but ended up with this color called NEW WOOL. none of the pictures here does this color justice as it's really a brownish pink tone. i had considered this for an upstairs room but felt it was better in a smaller confined space. not too dark yet has something there. this bathroom will be paired up with a black sink cabinet and white vanity most likely. i think the shower will be white. and i'm planning to put lots of art in this room.

^ again, so hard to get this color right in pictures. so i won't even try.

^ at the upstairs landing looking into the office. i hope you're ready for the office color because it's pretty shocking. ;)

so...this is the office in CITRUS SPICE which was the color i showed previously in one of the project DOMO entries. i had initially wanted to use this downstairs but everyone and their mother hated it and i felt it probably should be in a room that i loved to spend time in. so i figured i'd make the office into my own little retreat. again, the color here is hard to get exactly right in pictures. but it is quite citrusy and yet bright + dark both at the same time.

after painting it up here, i'm glad it wasn't done in the great room downstairs. it wouldn't be quite the same. here, i can enjoy it all i want without worrying about someone going into seizures. :p my dad for one absolutely hates it and it's a good deterrant to keep him away from my computers! ha! but i assure you, i have big plans for this room and it will look smashing by the time i'm done. looking at an empty room with vivid paint color is harsh - hard to be objective about it really. i know HGTV has at least taught many of us that right?

irregardless, i love this color. it's one of my fave colors in this house and it contrasts well with the view outside of leafy foliage and dried brown weeds. XP by late afternoon and night time, this room gets quite dark.

^ from this angle, you can already see the color of the master bathroom. :o

i *knew* one of my rooms in the house would be a pumpkin/persimmoney color because i've been talking about it forever and the master bathroom ended up being the lucky room. i wasn't sure if i was able to deal with a big room in this color so we thought it would look best here. it was a big contender for the office color though but citrus spice won out. this color here is aptly called SWEET POTATO.

the sweet potate really isn't too bright but with the flash, it sure looks really orangey. but i love the contrast with the white ceilings. so crisp!

since my bathroom is small, we'll head onto the master bedroom. we'll come back to the master bathroom later when i have more fixtures etc in here to make it pretty. :)

the final room is of course the master bedroom in a color whose name rocks, DANGEROUS ROBOT. dangerous robot was one of those colors that i kept on going back to the look at the paint chip but didn't really think it would "fit" as i didn't want a gray or purple room per se. i had initially wanted this room to be some sort of rich brown color but nixed the idea after testing out many browns that was incompatible to what i wanted. dangerous robot was the very last paint i went to try out and just was floored by the subtlety of its beauty.

it's really a gray color above all else but there is a slight tinge of purple in there. it's not lavenderish by any means nor is it any sort of girly kids room type of purple. it's definitely a very sophisticated gray purple. you just have to see it in person to appreciate the color. it's so calming, modern and a great neutral with color in it.

^ looking out into the hallway (top landing). i love the way the high ceilings are emphasized by the contrasting colors.

^ view from the bedroom looking through the bathroom and into the office.

^ i think i love this paint even more so because of the cool name!

^ at the top landing, you look to the left and it's the CITRUS SPICE office. look to the right and it's the DANGEROUS ROBOT bedroom.

well that's it for the unveiling of the DOMO colors. the painting actually took place back in mid-april. i also initially had the master bedroom painted in some sort of beige-ish brown but it turned out to be too similar to RICE BOWL so i had the painters re-do the master bedroom.

i suppose that's not too bad for someone having to choose 6 paint colors and only messing up on one of her choices. i guess i could have messed up much worse than that. but am i relieved that the paint process is finally done. DONE! but what a different look DOMO has taken on now that painted walls are up! it actually is started to have its own mood now.

but this is only the beginning of the road to personalization of my own home and making decisions on every detail of the house. in the following 3 months after the painting of the house, i've become more hands on than ever in making decisions on flooring, lighting, cabinets, fans, vanity counters etc etc etc. the list just doesn't end. ever. when you think you've got one thing checked off - another monster is ready for you to take it on.

stay tuned for a couple (at least) more entries on DOMO.
